I'm going to say something that sounds pretty basic, but isn't: most companies buy lighting using the wrong number. They look at unit price. I used to do that too. The TCO idea is not new, but it's often ignored in lighting. Let me be clear: I'm not saying every light in your building should be top-of-the-line. If a fixture is in a room with low ceiling, low daily use, and no occupied hours, buying basic can be totally rational. The mistake is making that decision by default. For anything installed above a desk, on a ceiling over a walkway, or in a work vehicle, I want the part that is less likely to fail. The brand with published specs. Stop asking, "What does this downlight cost?" Start asking, "What does this light cost us over five years?" Use the TCO list. Include the labor. Include the risk of failure. Include the energy. Then choose the fixture that makes the total cost work — not the one that makes the purchase order look small. That's the way to defend a lighting budget to operations and finance at the same time. It gives you something better than a lower number: a defensible number.
