Under-cabinet lighting comes down to four decisions: beam, color, power, and control. If you're evaluating a strip before those four are defined, you're shopping in the wrong order.
I coordinate lighting replacements and emergency installations. 1. Physical fit and beam angle
First, look at the cabinet. Is there a valance? A metal frame? Do you want light washing over the countertop or a tighter pool directly below the fixture? 4. Smart control: Wi-Fi vs Zigbee

For a zigbee ledstrip, the key is the controller. You can't take a Zigbee strip and plug it into a Wi-Fi outlet and expect low-latency scenes. You need a Zigbee LED controller, or a strip designed with Zigbee built in. I lean Zigbee for built-in installations because the mesh stays local if your internet wobbles. Wi-Fi can be fine if you don't want a hub or you're renting.
I'll confess: Zigbee setup is less simple on day one. If you already have a Zigbee hub or are willing to buy one, it pays off in reliability. If not, Wi-Fi might be the least-headache path.
Why total cost beats unit price
People pick under-cabinet lighting the way they pick a phone charger: cheapest with the right plug. Then it buzzes, flickers, or dies in a year.
Total cost of ownership—TCO, if you like—includes strip price, driver, connectors, mounting channel, installation labor, and the cost of doing it again when something doesn't fit. A $30 strip can turn into a $230 problem after a weekend of rework.
As of early 2025, I'm seeing good residential Zigbee LED strip kits from $35 to $80. But plan another $60 to $150 for a driver, mounting, and possible electrician work. A $200 install that lasts a decade is cheaper than a $50 kit that fails in two years. That's not an anti-cheap statement; it's simple lifetime math.
The same logic applies to automotive bulbs
