I cannot tell you the 'best' lighting solution until I know why you are asking. A facility manager with a flickering troffer on a Friday afternoon has different priorities than an automotive tech installing an LED H4 bulb, and both are different from someone trying to decide between Zigbee and Thread for a smart lighting retrofit. If there is one thing I have learned, it is this: the time you spend deciding is often more expensive than the money you spend fixing.

When someone asks me how to fix a light fixture, the first question I ask is not about color temperature. It is: how many hours do we have? If the answer is less than 24, the decision process changes completely.
Start with a quick diagnostic. A dead fixture is usually one of four things: a failed lamp, a failed driver or ballast, a loose connection, or a bad switch. If one fixture in a row is out, it is often the lamp or the socket. If a whole row goes out at once, check the ballast or driver and the circuit before ordering anything.
This is where the 'time certainty premium' kicks in. In March 2024, a client called at 4:30 PM needing 60 LED tubes for a trade show booth by 7 AM. Normal turnaround was three days. It is 'which protocol does your hub or ecosystem already support?' A Zigbee light is useless if your hub only speaks Z-Wave. A Thread border router will not help if the fixture you want does not have Thread.
Here is how I see it:
- Z-Wave is excellent for locks, sensors, and security devices. It uses sub-GHz frequencies, so it suffers less Wi-Fi congestion. But lighting options are fewer, and you almost always need a dedicated Z-Wave hub.
- Zigbee is the most common protocol in lighting. Many connected lighting products, including earlier Osram smart systems, use Zigbee. It is a mature mesh protocol with a huge ecosystem, but it shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi.
- Thread is IP-based and designed to work with Matter. It is better for future-proofing if you are starting from zero, but the lighting product selection is still smaller than Zigbee.
To be fair, I have also had mixed experiences with Zigbee hubs, and I understand why some people prefer Z-Wave for its stability. But I would not call any protocol inferior. If you ask me, the protocol is the last thing to decide. Choose the products you need, then match the protocol to your hub.

Because the common thread is not a brand or a protocol. It is time, feasibility, and risk. In every emergency, an uncertain cheap option is more expensive than a certain cost. That is not about spending more—it is about spending to reduce risk.
