How to Change a Light Bulb in Recessed Lighting: A Pro’s 6-Step Guide

When This Checklist Helps

If you've got a recessed light (a downlight, a can light, a pot light—they're all the same thing) with a burnt-out bulb, and you're not sure which replacement to buy, or you've tried twisting it out and it won't budge, this is for you.

This checklist covers the 6 steps I use when I'm helping a client swap bulbs in their home or small office. It's not for new construction wiring. It's for the 90% case: you have a working fixture, you just need a new bulb in it.

Step 1: Identify Your Bulb Base and Trim Type

Before you buy anything, look at your current bulb. What base does it have? The most common in residential recessed lighting are:

  • GU10 (twist-and-lock, two pins) – Common in track and smaller downlights. Requires a quarter-turn to lock.
  • MR16 (two push-pins or GU5.3 base) – Often low-voltage (12V), needs a transformer in the ceiling.
  • PAR20, PAR30, PAR38 (screw base, E26/E27) – Standard screw-in, same as a regular lamp.
  • BR30 (screw base) – The classic 5- or 6-inch can light bulb.

I've made the mistake of buying a BR30 when I needed a PAR20. They look similar from a distance. Check the base. If it's a screw base, you're likely in the BR/PAR family. If it's a two-pin twist, it's GU10. If it's two pins that push straight in, it's MR16/GU5.3.

Step 2: Choose the Right Bulb Type (LED vs Old Tech)

Almost everything is LED now, and for good reason. But not all LEDs are the same. For recessed lighting, I almost always recommend:

  • Dimmable LED bulbs – Even if your current switch isn't on a dimmer, it's worth buying dimmable anyway. It gives future flexibility.
  • Color temperature: 2700K-3000K (warm white) for living spaces. Anything above 3500K starts to feel clinical.
  • Beam angle: For a can light, a wide flood (40-60 degrees) is usually best. Spot bulbs (25 degrees) look like spotlights.

Everything I'd read said premium options always outperform budget ones. In practice, for standard dimmable BR30 bulbs in a residential setting, a mid-tier Osram or Philips bulb often delivers better color consistency than the bargain-bin brands. The cheapest ones sometimes flicker on dimmers.

Step 3: Remove the Old Bulb (the Right Way)

This is where people get stuck. Don't yank the bulb.

  • For screw-base (BR30, PAR): Turn it counter-clockwise. If it's stuck, try pressing the bulb slightly inward first to break the seal.
  • For GU10: Rotate the bulb 90 degrees counter-clockwise until the pins align with the slots, then pull down.
  • For MR16 (pin base): Pull the bulb straight down, but gently. The pins can bend.

In March 2024, 36 hours before a client's photo shoot, I had to remove a stuck GU10 from a kitchen downlight. Normal removal takes 30 seconds. This one took 15 minutes because someone had used silicone sealant around the edge of the bulb. If you feel resistance, stop, check for sealant or corrosion, and use a gentle rocking motion.

Safety note: Wait 5 minutes after turning off the switch for the bulb to cool. Many LED bulbs get hot near the base, even if the lens feels cool.

Step 4: Check the Trim (and Clean It)

While the bulb is out, inspect the trim. This is an optional but valuable step—most people ignore it.

The trim is the ring that holds the bulb and forms the visible edge of the fixture. Over time, it collects dust, which absorbs light and reduces efficiency. I've seen trims so dusty that swapping the bulb and cleaning the trim made the room feel 20% brighter.

  • Wipe the trim with a dry microfiber cloth.
  • Check if the trim is loose. If it's wobbling, tighten the spring clips (if accessible) or replace the trim gasket.

My experience is based on about 300 bulb swaps over the last 4 years, mostly in residential settings. If you're working with commercial-grade recessed fixtures (like those with built-in LED modules instead of replaceable bulbs), this checklist might need adjustments—you'd be replacing the entire trim unit, not just the bulb.

Step 5: Install the New Bulb

Installation is the reverse of removal, but with two critical checks:

  • Don't overtighten screw-base bulbs. Screw them in until they stop, then give a gentle quarter-turn snug. Over-tightening can crack the lamp holder.
  • For GU10 and MR16: Ensure the pins fully engage. For GU10, you should feel a locking click when twisted 90 degrees.
  • Check for dimmer compatibility after installation. Turn on the light. If it flickers or buzzes, you likely have a dimmer that's not fully compatible with your LED bulb. This is common with older dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs.

People think flickering is a bulb defect. Actually, it's a dimmer compatibility issue about 80% of the time. The dimmer and LED bulb need to 'talk' to each other. A newer, LED-rated dimmer usually solves it. If you're using a Zigbee smart switch (like those in the Osram Lightify ecosystem), make sure the switch is rated for LED loads—most are, but older ones may have a minimum wattage requirement.

Step 6: Test and Adjust (if Smart)

If your new bulb is part of a smart lighting system—say, you're using a Zigbee hygrometer and smart bulb to automate your bathroom fan based on humidity—you'll need to pair the bulb with your hub.

  • Follow the manufacturer's pairing procedure (usually: turn the light off and on 3 times, then search in the app).
  • Test the dimming range. Some bulbs dim down to 1%, others only to 10%. That matters if you use nighttime dimming.
  • If the bulb doesn't respond, check the Zigbee signal strength. A recessed fixture in a metal can sometimes blocks the signal. I've had to relocate a Zigbee coordinator closer to solve this.

I've only worked with the Osram Lightify ecosystem for smart recessed lighting. I can't speak to how this applies to other systems, but the pairing principle is similar: the hub must be within range, and the bulb must be in pairing mode.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using non-dimmable LEDs with a dimmer switch. This causes buzzing, flickering, and shortens bulb life. Always check the box.
  • Ignoring trim size. A PAR30 bulb may physically fit in a BR30 trim, but it'll look wrong and may overheat if the trim is too enclosed.
  • Skipping the safety label. If the fixture says 'Type IC' (insulation contact), you can put insulation directly against it. If it says 'Non-IC', keep insulation away—otherwise you risk overheating and fire.
  • Buying 'bulbs near me' blindly. If you search for "osram bulbs near me", you'll get local retailers. That's fine for convenience, but check the base and beam angle before purchasing. Most brick-and-mortar stores stock limited variants.

That's the checklist. Five minutes of work once you've got the right bulb. If you're replacing multiple recessed lights, I'd budget 10-15 minutes per fixture the first time, then 5 minutes per fixture after that—speed comes with familiarity.
